Your Eye Examination
Your eye examination at Penzer Opticians, Maypole, South Birmingham will reveal more than just the health of your eyes. We understand that your eyes are unique and we will undertake a thorough and detailed eye examination. It takes one of our highly qualified and experienced Optometrists about 25 minutes to complete the test. He or she will examine all aspects of your ocular health.
As part of the eye examination, they will look to find out about the current quality of your eye sight and to establish the general health of your eyes. Did you know that your eyes can give an optometrist some clues about your general well being? And they will be checking for signs of glaucoma and cataracts, as well as serious conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
If the optometrist feels your sight has changed, he or she will advise you that a new prescription is required and you will be given a personal written prescription. In the event that something more serious is found, they will carry out further checks and may refer you to an opthamologist or your GP for further investigation.
OCT testing (Optical Coherence Tomography) is now available at Penzer Opticians for NHS, private and non-registered patients too. It is particularly useful in detecting potentially sight threatening conditions such as glaucoma up to four years earlier than traditional methods and macular degeneration. OCT testing is not part of the NHS Eye Test but is performed as part of an extended eye test at an extra cost. You will be offered this additional test which is not mandatory, or ask the optical receptionist. Click for more details and a short video.
Of course it may be that you are entitled to a free NHS eye examination. To see if you qualify click here. If not, then the cost of an eye examination is £30.
